Inward or Outward Opening

The perfect window opens the right way for your climate, architecture, and how you live.

Most windows are either inward or outward opening. Whether you choose traditional outward opening designs - developed for harsh climates where wind pressure enhances sealing - or contemporary inward opening styles that offer easier cleaning and larger configurations, every option maintains our uncompromising standards for comfort and energy efficiency.

FIXED FRAME

TOP HUNG

Perfect for high-level ventilation and privacy, top hung windows open outward from the bottom with built-in friction brakes.

Ideal for bathrooms and kitchens where you want fresh air with privacy, as cool air flows in below while warm air escapes above. The design maintains excellent thermal performance and energy efficiency through advanced sealing systems.

SIDE HUNG

Our versatile side hung windows open outward on side hinges, offering maximum opening area and excellent ventilation without taking up internal space.

The classic choice for most residential applications, providing excellent ventilation control and unobstructed views. Multi-point locking systems ensure security while maintaining the sleek aesthetics that complement both traditional and contemporary homes.

FULLY REVERSIBLE

Clean your windows safely from inside with fully reversible operation, rotating 180 degrees for complete access to both sides of the glazing.

Particularly valuable for upper floors and hard-to-reach locations, these windows rotate completely, eliminating the need for external cleaning access. They feature weatherproof sealing and varied ventilation options as users can control airflow from multiple angles.

TILT-IN

Tilt-in operation provides secure ventilation by opening inward from the top, creating a controlled airflow while maintaining security and safety.

Ideal for anywhere you want ventilation with security, a gentle inward tilt from the top edge of the window delivers fresh air while the restricted opening prevents accidental falls. The perfect combination of effective airflow, easy operation and energy efficiency.

What is a tilt-in window?

A tilt-in window opens by tilting the top edge of the sash inward, creating a restricted gap at the top of the frame. This provides continuous background ventilation while limiting the opening to a few centimetres - improving security and preventing accidental falls. Unlike a tilt and turn window, a tilt-in window offers only the tilt ventilation mode, not a full inward-opening turn function.

How does a tilt-in window differ from a tilt and turn window?

A tilt-in window provides tilt ventilation only - the sash does not open fully. A tilt and turn window offers both modes: tilt for background ventilation and full inward turn for maximum airflow and cleaning access.

Where secure background ventilation is the primary requirement and full opening is not needed, a tilt-in is a simpler and more cost-effective specification.

Are tilt-in windows suitable for bedrooms?

Yes. Tilt-in windows are well-suited to bedrooms, children's rooms, and upper-floor applications where secure overnight ventilation is needed without the risk of the window being pushed fully open.

The restricted opening also satisfies Building Regulations requirements for restricted openings in rooms accessible to children.

Do tilt-in windows provide adequate ventilation?

Yes, for background and thermal ventilation purposes. The top-tilt opening creates a convective air movement: cooler external air enters low and warm internal air exits high.

For active or cross-ventilation, a fully opening window is more effective. In Passive House and mechanically ventilated buildings, tilt ventilation supplements MVHR.

Are tilt-in windows thermally efficient?

Yes. Tilt-in windows in Norrsken's range share the same profile systems and glazing specification as all other opening configurations.

In closed and sealed mode, they achieve the same whole-window Uw values as equivalent turn-in or casement windows - below 0.80 W/m²K in triple-glazed Passive House configurations.
