What U-value do double glazed doors achieve?

Double-glazed external doors with Low-E glass, argon fill, and warm-edge spacers typically achieve whole-door Ud values of approximately 1.0–1.4 W/m²K depending on the proportion of glazed area and frame specification. Norrsken's double-glazed timber and alu-clad doors achieve Ud values around 1.3 W/m²K - sufficient for current Building Regulations but below the threshold needed for Passive House certification.

Are double glazed doors suitable for a home extension?

Double-glazed doors are appropriate for extensions where the overall SAP or energy model is not tightly constrained, and where the budget does not extend to triple glazing. However, for extensions designed to improve overall thermal performance, or where the adjacent rooms are already well-insulated, triple glazing will deliver noticeably better comfort, reduced heat loss, and lower condensation risk at the glazed threshold.

Do double glazed doors comply with Building Regulations?

Yes. Double-glazed external doors meeting a whole-door Ud value of 1.4 W/m²K or below satisfy current Building Regulations Part L requirements for replacement doors in England. For new builds, door U-values contribute to the dwelling energy model alongside walls, roof, and floor: improved door performance gives additional flexibility elsewhere in the specification.

Are double glazed bi-fold or sliding doors available?

Yes. Norrsken's double-glazed range includes sliding and bi-fold configurations in alu-clad timber and all-timber frames. Double glazing is a practical specification for renovation projects, outbuildings, or situations where planning conditions or structural constraints limit the frame depth required for triple glazing.

What are the main reasons to choose triple glazed doors over double?

The primary advantages of triple glazing over double in external doors are lower whole-door U-values (typically 0.72–0.85 W/m²K vs 1.0–1.4 W/m²K), improved airtightness performance, higher internal glass surface temperatures, reducing condensation at threshold level, and better acoustic performance. For new builds and low-energy projects, the whole-life comfort and energy benefit of triple glazing outweighs the additional upfront cost in most cases.

Can I specify double glazed doors with aluminium cladding?

Yes. Alu-clad double-glazed doors are available across Norrsken's range, providing the warmth of a timber interior with a low-maintenance powder-coated aluminium exterior in any RAL colour. This combination offers a competitive performance and aesthetic specification for renovation and new-build projects where the budget or specification does not extend to triple glazing.
