Inward or Outward Opening

The perfect window opens the right way for your climate, architecture, and how you live.

Most windows are either inward or outward opening. Whether you choose traditional outward opening designs - developed for harsh climates where wind pressure enhances sealing - or contemporary inward opening styles that offer easier cleaning and larger configurations, every option maintains our uncompromising standards for comfort and energy efficiency.

FIXED FRAME

Modern room with large triple-glazed windows offering a view of a field, featuring a cozy corner with a chair and blanket.

TOP HUNG

Perfect for high-level ventilation and privacy, top hung windows open outward from the bottom with built-in friction brakes.

Ideal for bathrooms and kitchens where you want fresh air with privacy, as cool air flows in below while warm air escapes above. The design maintains excellent thermal performance and energy efficiency through advanced sealing systems.

SIDE HUNG

Our versatile side hung windows open outward on side hinges, offering maximum opening area and excellent ventilation without taking up internal space.

The classic choice for most residential applications, providing excellent ventilation control and unobstructed views. Multi-point locking systems ensure security while maintaining the sleek aesthetics that complement both traditional and contemporary homes.

FULLY REVERSIBLE

Clean your windows safely from inside with fully reversible operation, rotating 180 degrees for complete access to both sides of the glazing.

Particularly valuable for upper floors and hard-to-reach locations, these windows rotate completely, eliminating the need for external cleaning access. They feature weatherproof sealing and varied ventilation options as users can control airflow from multiple angles.

TILT-IN

Tilt-in operation provides secure ventilation by opening inward from the top, creating a controlled airflow while maintaining security and safety.

Ideal for anywhere you want ventilation with security, a gentle inward tilt from the top edge of the window delivers fresh air while the restricted opening prevents accidental falls. The perfect combination of effective airflow, easy operation and energy efficiency.

TURN-IN

The inward opening complement to side hung windows, turn-in windows swing inward on side hinges for full access, ventilation, and easy cleaning.

Opening fully inward from side hinges, these energy-efficient windows provide complete access and maximum airflow with convenient cleaning from inside. Perfect for living spaces where you want the option of wide-open connections to the outdoors.

Are timber windows better than uPVC?

Timber windows outperform uPVC in thermal efficiency, environmental credentials, and longevity when properly maintained.

Timber is a naturally superior insulator, enabling lower whole-window U-values than PVC frames. Sustainably sourced timber is a renewable material with significantly lower embodied carbon than uPVC and is biodegradable at end of life.

Do timber windows need to be triple glazed to perform well?

Triple glazing is not always required, but it is usually necessary to achieve whole-window Uw values below 1.0 W/m²K in a timber frame.

Double-glazed timber windows typically achieve Uw values of approximately 1.0–1.3 W/m²K with warm-edge spacers and Low-E glass. For Passive House and low-energy projects targeting below 0.80 W/m²K, triple glazing is required.

Are engineered timber frames better than solid timber for windows?

For window applications, engineered (laminated) timber is preferable to solid-sawn timber.

Laminated construction is dimensionally more stable – it reduces the risk of warping, twisting, or moisture ingress over time – and typically delivers more consistent long-term performance. Norrsken uses laminated timber frames as standard across the range.

How much maintenance do timber windows require?

Timber windows require periodic inspection and repainting or restaining, typically every five to ten years depending on exposure and finish quality.

Norrsken's timber windows receive multi-coat protection treatment in manufacture, extending the time between maintenance cycles. For minimal external maintenance, alu-clad windows provide a practical alternative with an identical timber interior. Hardware should be inspected and maintained at least twice per year to ensure smooth operation long-term.

How long do timber windows last?

Well-maintained laminated timber windows can last 50 years or more. The key variables are timber quality, finish protection, installation detailing, and user maintenance and care. Norrsken uses precision-engineered laminated timber, which significantly improves dimensional stability and moisture resistance compared to solid-sawn equivalents.

Can timber windows be used in a conservation area?

Timber windows are frequently the preferred – and in some cases required – specification in conservation areas, where planning authorities may restrict uPVC or aluminium. Norrsken's timber windows can be specified with traditional configurations, period-appropriate glazing bar profiles, and heritage-style hardware. Specific planning requirements should be confirmed with the local planning authority at the design stage.

Are timber windows more sustainable than uPVC or aluminium?

Yes, in most whole-life assessments. Responsibly sourced timber has significantly lower embodied carbon than uPVC or all-aluminium alternatives, a longer typical service life than uPVC, and better end-of-life characteristics than both. For projects with embodied carbon targets or sustainability accreditation requirements, timber is the most defensible specification. Manufacturer EPD certificates provide verified data for project-level whole-life comparisons.

Can timber windows achieve Passive House performance?

Yes. Norrsken's triple-glazed timber windows achieve whole-window Uw values around 0.70 W/m²K – below the Passive House Institute's threshold of 0.80 W/m²K.

The 88mm laminated timber frame accommodates a 50mm triple-glazed unit with argon gas fill, warm-edge spacer bars, and dual Low-E coatings. Full PHPP-compatible data is available for the range.
