Do timber external doors warp or shrink over time?
Engineered (laminated) timber doors are significantly more stable than solid-sawn timber and far less susceptible to warping and moisture-induced shrinkage.
Norrsken uses laminated timber throughout its door range with multi-coat factory finishes that protect against moisture ingress. Correct installation and threshold detailing are also key to long-term stability.
What U-value can a timber door achieve?
Timber doors with triple glazed panels and insulated cores can achieve whole-door Ud values at or below 0.80 W/m²K - the Passive House Institute's threshold for external doors.
The precise figure depends on the glazed area, infill specification, and frame depth. Norrsken's Passive House-capable timber door range achieves Ud values from 0.72 W/m²K.
Are timber doors suitable for a Passive House project?
Yes. Timber and timber-aluminium composite doors are the most widely specified door materials for Passive House construction, because the timber core provides naturally superior thermal performance compared to aluminium or uPVC.
With triple glazing and compression seals, they can meet the 0.80 W/m²K Ud threshold required for PHI certification.
How secure are timber external doors?
Norrsken's timber doors incorporate multi-point locking systems and are manufactured to comply with PAS 24:2016, the UK's enhanced security standard. Laminated timber is inherently strong and resistant to forced entry: timber is harder to deflect under lateral pressure than aluminium-framed equivalents. Glazed sections use laminated glass as standard on entry doors.
Can timber doors be used in a conservation area?
Yes. Timber is often the preferred material in conservation areas, where planning authorities often require traditional materials and may prohibit uPVC. Norrsken's timber doors can be specified with period-appropriate profiles, panel configurations, and heritage finishes. Specific requirements should always be confirmed with the local planning authority before detailed specification.
How long do timber external doors last?
Properly maintained engineered timber doors can last 30–50 years or more. Factory-applied multi-coat finishes extend protection significantly between maintenance cycles. The key factors are finish quality, installation detailing, threshold and sill design, and ongoing maintenance.
Can I specify timber doors with aluminium cladding externally?
Yes. Alu-clad timber doors combine a high-performance laminated timber core with a powder-coated aluminium exterior that requires no repainting and is available in any RAL colour. This eliminates a large proportion of external maintenance requirements while retaining the warmth of real wood internally, and is the most popular configuration for high-performance new builds.
