We're delighted to announce that TAS Architects' project Long Barn has won the RIBA East Award 2026.

The carefully designed AECB-standard home was praised by the judges for its "holistic approach to sustainability and wellbeing, including the use of natural building materials and a design that supports comfortable, long-term living." (RIBAJ).

Context & Placement

Durability and ease of maintenance run through every material choice on this project. The pitched roofs are clad in zinc and deliberately designed without gutters, using robust, low-maintenance materials throughout.

The buildings themselves are built from off-site manufactured glulam frames, and the open-plan living space is defined by an exposed timber structure and a vaulted ceiling that gives the whole space real presence.

The jury singled out the placement of the new house within its sensitive context for particular praise, noting how carefully it respects the mature trees on site and responds to the significance and setting of the historic building alongside it. The result, in their words, is a discreet, low-impact contemporary intervention that sits comfortably within its surroundings.

Designing for life

Living spaces face south towards the woodland views, while bedrooms face east to capture the morning sun.

Window design has been carefully considered to maximise natural daylight while managing solar gain, and the main living space opens into a tall, double-aspect vaulted room. Smaller rooms are arranged around a small courtyard, drawing daylight and greenery into the heart of the home.

The client's long experience as an architect is evident in the detailed thinking behind how the home is serviced. The plant room was carefully planned, and the MVHR ducts were oversized to keep the system quiet in operation. Lighting has been thoughtfully integrated too, subtly illuminating the engineered timber ceiling above.

Windows and doors for considered projects

Long Barn used Norrsken's S307A outward opening glazed entrance door, P31A outward opening windows and S305A panel entrance door.

Windows and doors were specified in muted tones - RAL 9007 Grey Aluminium externally and Grey stained timber internally - to complement the restrained palette of the wider house.

The result is a carefully crafted, low-impact home that shows how thoughtful contemporary design can sit comfortably within a sensitive historic and landscape setting. Norrsken are delighted to have been involved with such a special project.

“The quality of the triple glazed, alu-clad windows and doors is superb. They feel so reassuringly solid ... I opted for a wood stain for the internal finish on the frames, and am so glad I did, as it shows off the beauty of the wood perfectly. The whole process from order to installation went smoothly. I thoroughly recommend Norrsken.”
