What U-value should a front door achieve?

For current Building Regulations compliance, external doors require a whole-door Ud value of 1.4 W/m²K or below in England. For low-energy builds and Passive House projects, a Ud value of 0.80 W/m²K or below is required by the Passive House Institute. Norrsken's Passive House entrance door range achieves Ud values from 0.72 W/m²K.

Are triple glazed front doors worth the additional cost?

For new builds and significant renovations, triple glazed entrance doors deliver measurably lower heat loss, reduced condensation around the threshold, and improved acoustic performance compared to double-glazed equivalents. The thermal improvement is most significant in well-insulated buildings where doors represent a proportionally larger share of the heat loss pathway.

What is the most thermally efficient material for an external front door?

Timber and timber-aluminium composite (alu-clad) frames deliver the lowest whole-door U-values because timber is a better natural insulator than aluminium or uPVC. All-aluminium doors require thermal breaks to approach the performance of timber equivalents and rarely match them. For Passive House and low-energy builds, timber or alu-clad is the preferred specification.

How secure should a front door be?

All Norrsken external entrance doors are manufactured to comply with PAS 24:2016, the UK's enhanced security standard, which includes resistance to physical attack, weather performance, and locking system requirements. Multi-point locking and laminated glass are standard on glazed entrance doors.

Can I specify a solid (unglazed) front door?

Yes. Norrsken's entrance door range includes fully solid panel options as well as part-glazed configurations. Solid panel doors typically achieve lower Ud values than glazed equivalents, as insulated opaque panels outperform glazed units thermally. Where a lower whole-door U-value is needed for the energy model, a solid or largely unglazed door may be the most effective specification.

Can front doors be specified in any colour?

Yes. All Norrsken alu-clad entrance doors can be powder-coated in any RAL colour externally, with a different RAL colour or natural timber finish internally. Solid colours, textured finishes, and marine-grade coatings for coastal locations are all available.
