The Newbery Steps project represents a meticulous effort to restore and reimagine the Newbery Steps Cricket Pavilion, located in the picturesque Dean Park, Bournemouth. This building, dating back to the early 1900s and previously in a state of disrepair, has been meticulously restored and repurposed, transforming it into a vibrant community space.

Vision & Values

Conceived by award-winning practice Footprint Architects, the design reflects the Newbery Steps' heritage while incorporating contemporary elements to improve structural and environmental performance.

At Norrsken, we're passionate about crafting windows and doors that not only enhance the beauty of a building but also contribute to its long-term sustainability and energy efficiency. The Newbery Steps Cricket Pavilion project perfectly embodies this philosophy, seamlessly integrating engineered timber windows and doors with both historic and contemporary design.

Design & Building

Greendale Construction has transformed the Newberry Steps with a stunning new timber glulam structure featuring a curved zinc roof. The building's interior has been modernized with new finishes, mechanical systems, and an energy-efficient air source heat pump for underfloor heating.

The design of the new curved roof honors the original semi-circular timber frame, maintaining the pavilion's historical character while incorporating modern enhancements - like glulam timber structural elements - to improve both structural integrity and environmental performance.

Timber windows frame the stunning views of the cricket field, allowing natural light to flood the interior while minimizing heat loss.

Sustainability at the Core

The Newbery Steps project prioritized sustainability.

The careful dismantling process by Greendale Construction and Footprint allowed salvage of original materials: floorboards were repurposed for external cladding, sarking boards for internal cladding, and signposts were preserved to reflect the pavilion's original function.

Slow-grown, Northern European pine used in Norrsken products is selected from FSC and PEFC certified suppliers, and our manufacturing processes minimize waste. The inherent insulating properties of timber, combined with our advanced glazing technology, significantly reduce the pavilion's energy consumption.

A Lasting Legacy

Norrsken is honored to have been part of the Newbery Steps Cricket Pavilion project.
