Bespoke Windows and Doors - Made to Order Guide
Bespoke, made to order windows and doors are designed and manufactured for each project individually. This guide explains what characterises bespoke windows and doors, how to compare frames and glazing and why end-to-end supply and installation from Norrsken protects the performance you pay for.
What does bespoke made to order mean?
A bespoke window or door is manufactured for an individual project. Rather than choosing from fixed sizes on a shelf, you specify the exact dimensions, frame material, configuration, opening style, glazing, colour and hardware for each opening.
Understanding the difference between the products on offer helps you compare quotes fairly.
| Route | What you can change | Who manages specification, survey and fitting | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard stock windows | Size range, a few colours | Usually you or your builder | Standard openings on a tight budget |
| Made to measure | Dimensions within an existing system | Varies by supplier | Replacements where style is already set |
| Bespoke made to order | Size, configuration, glazing, colour, hardware and detailing | Varies by supplier | New builds, self builds, extensions and renovations |
| Norrsken bespoke, supplied and installed | Size, configuration, glazing, colour, hardware and detailing | One team from specification to installation | Projects where performance, fit and design freedom matter |
Always ask a supplier which elements can be changed and what additional services their quotation includes.
Why specification, supply and installation belong together
Ordering bespoke windows and doors for a is a significant and often complex undertaking. The process involves various professionals at each stage: architect, supplier, surveyor and installer, to name a few.
When those roles belong to different teams - different companies, even, small errors and important details are easily overlooked.
That is why Norrsken offers specification, supply and installation as one service:
- Specification: we work with you or your architect to choose the right frame, glazing, opening style and hardware for each opening, using real performance data.
- Consultancy: we consider the details of your building structure and wall interfaces to recommend details compatible with our products and your project
- Supply: every window and door is made to order to the agreed drawings.
- Installation: our installation teams fit what we specified, so the airtightness and thermal detailing designed on paper is delivered on site.
It also means one point of responsibility. If a question comes up about fit, finish or performance, you speak to one team rather than chasing several. Read more about why installation matters as much as the window.
Choosing the right frame material
The frame material shapes how your windows perform, how they look and how much care they need over their life. The right choice depends on the architecture, the exposure of the site, your thermal targets and your budget.
- Timber: a natural insulator with a warm, crafted look inside and out. Needs periodic refinishing externally.
- Alu-clad timber: a timber frame on the inside with a durable powder-coated aluminium shell on the outside. You keep the warmth and insulating value of wood indoors, with minimal maintenance on the weather side. Read more about the value of alu-clad timber frame windows.
- All aluminium: strong with slim frames, but aluminium conducts heat far more readily than timber, so whole-window U-values are usually higher.
- uPVC: economical and low maintenance, with thicker profiles, shorter lifespan and less scope for bespoke detailing.
Norrsken specialises in timber and alu-clad timber windows and doors, because timber gives the best balance of thermal performance, longevity and appearance for high-performance homes.
Our highest-performing triple-glazed windows achieve a whole-window U-value of 0.64 W/m²K, verified in our own PHPP modelling. That sits comfortably inside the 0.80 W/m²K Passive House threshold for windows. Download our PHPP data.
Glazing and U-values
Glazing matters as much as the frame. Depending on your project, the specification might include double or triple glazing, low-emissivity coatings, solar-control glass for large south or west-facing openings, acoustic laminated glass near busy roads, and toughened or laminated safety glass where required.
A U-value measures how much heat passes through an element of a building, in watts per square metre per Kelvin (W/m²K). The lower the number, the better the insulation.
Compare whole-window U-values (Uw), not centre-pane glass values (Ug)
A centre-pane figure measure heat loss from the middle of the glass - the warmest part of a glazing unit. The whole-window value includes the frame and glass edge, where more heat is lost, and is a more accurate reflection of performance. Norrsken triple-glazed windows range from 0.64 to 0.94 W/m²K, and our double-glazed windows from around 1.24 to 1.29 W/m²K. For a deeper look, see why use triple-glazed windows and doors.
Share your drawings or a few details and our team will help you specify the right windows and doors and prepare a tailored quote.
Bespoke window and door styles
Made to order manufacturing lets each opening be designed around how the room is used, not just its size.
- Casement windows: side or top-hung, inward or outward opening, including flush designs for a clean elevation.
- Tilt and turn windows: tilt inward for secure ventilation or open fully for cleaning.
- Fixed and shaped glazing: triangular gable windows, large fixed panes and unusual openings.
- Entrance doors: designed with the right proportions, glazing and security for the property. See our front doors.
- Garden and terrace doors: French doors, sliding doors and bi-fold doors. Sliding doors maximise uninterrupted glass, while bi-folds give the widest clear opening.
The made to order process, step by step
Every project is different, but a well-run bespoke project follows a clear sequence. This is how a Norrsken project typically runs:
- Consultation: we discuss the property, the architecture, your performance targets and your budget.
- Specification and quote: we specify frames, glazing, opening styles, colours and hardware for each opening, and prepare a detailed quote.
- Survey: we measure the finished structural openings accurately before anything is manufactured or consult on manufacturing sizes from your drawings.
- Quote sign-off: you check and approve our quotation covering dimensions, opening directions, colours, glazing and hardware.
- Manufacture: each window and door is made to order to the approved drawings.
- Installation: our teams install, seal and adjust every unit, with the thermal and airtightness detailing that was specified.
- Handover: you receive the relevant certification, warranty and care information.
The survey and sign-off matter most. Bespoke products are made for one opening, so an error at either stage is expensive to correct later.
Supply only or supply and install?
Some projects buy bespoke windows on a supply-only basis and use a separate installer. That can work with an experienced contractor, but make sure these questions have clear answers before you order:
- Who takes the final measurements, and who is responsible if a unit is measured incorrectly?
- Who is responsible for sealing, airtightness and thermal detailing at installation?
- Who handles a warranty claim if an installation fault appears later?
With a supply and install service, those responsibilities sit with one company. For many self builders and architects, that single point of accountability is worth as much as the product itself.
Planning, Building Regulations and certification
Replacing windows like for like does not always need planning permission, but listed buildings, conservation areas and changes to the appearance or size of openings may. Check your planning position before you order.
Energy performance for windows and doors in England is set by Approved Document L. Replacement windows need a whole-window U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better, and new homes are typically specified at 1.2 W/m²K or better. Replacement work can be self-certified by an installer registered with a Competent Person Scheme. New builds and new extensions are signed off through Building Control. Read our guide to understanding Part L Building Regulations.

Your questions answered
We've answered the most common questions about bespoke, made to order windows and doors below.

What is the difference between bespoke and made to measure windows?
Made to measure usually means a standard window system manufactured to your dimensions. Bespoke goes further, giving you control over configuration, glazing, colour, hardware and detailing so each window suits the building as well as the opening.
Does Norrsken supply and install bespoke windows and doors?
Yes. Norrsken specifies, supplies and installs bespoke timber and alu-clad windows and doors. One team manages your project from specification and survey through to installation and handover.
Why does installation affect window performance?
A window's U-value is measured in controlled conditions. On site, gaps, missing seals or poor thermal detailing around the frame let heat and air escape, so the installed window performs worse than its rating. Specifying and installing as one team closes that gap.
Are bespoke windows more expensive than standard windows?
Bespoke windows usually cost more upfront than stock sizes because each unit is designed and made for your project. In return you get a precise fit, the glazing and finish you want, and performance matched to your home.
How long do made to order windows and doors take?
Lead times depend on the material, glazing, finish and complexity of the order. Ask when the lead time starts, whether from deposit, survey or drawing approval, and build that into your project programme.
What is alu-clad timber?
Alu-clad timber combines a timber frame on the inside with a powder-coated aluminium shell on the outside. You get the warmth and insulating value of wood indoors with minimal maintenance on the weather-facing side.
Can bespoke windows be used in a Passive House?
Yes, if the whole-window U-value is 0.80 W/m²K or lower. Norrsken's highest-performing triple-glazed windows reach 0.64 W/m²K. Find out more about our Passive House windows.
Do I need planning permission for bespoke windows?
Not always. Like-for-like replacements often do not, but listed buildings, conservation areas and changes to openings may. Planning permission and Building Regulations are separate, so check both before you order.
