Do fixed frame windows achieve better U-values than opening windows?

Fixed frame windows typically achieve marginally better whole-window U-values than equivalent opening windows, because they have no operating hardware or seals that introduce thermal bridging or potential air infiltration points.

The difference is small in high-quality systems, but for maximum glazing performance in a specific area of the building envelope, fixed frames are the most efficient specification.

Why would I choose a fixed window instead of an opening one?

Fixed windows are specified where ventilation is provided by other means (such as MVHR in a Passive House, or adjacent opening windows), where maximum daylighting is the priority, or where structural or safety conditions restrict opening sashes.

They also allow larger glazed areas than most hardware-limited opening configurations, are usually cheaper in like-for-like comparisons, and deliver slightly superior thermal performance.

Can fixed frame windows be combined with opening windows in the same elevation?

Yes. Fixed and opening frames can be combined within the same profile system, maintaining consistent sightlines and finishes across a mixed elevation.

This is common in large contemporary glazing compositions where some lights are fixed for structural or aesthetic reasons and adjacent lights are opening for ventilation.

Are fixed frame windows suitable for Passive House?

Yes. Fixed frames are frequently used in Passive House projects for areas where mechanical ventilation via MVHR provides the required air change rate, eliminating the need for opening windows in those locations.

A fixed frame in a Passive House-specified profile achieves whole-window Uw values matching or slightly exceeding the equivalent opening window in the same system.

Can any Norrsken window profile be specified as a picture window?

Yes. Any inward or outward opening profile in the Norrsken range can be configured as a fixed frame, maintaining visual consistency across a mixed elevation.

This gives complete design flexibility: fixed lights can match the dimensions and finishes of adjacent opening windows.

Are fixed frame windows secure?

Yes. Fixed frame windows cannot be opened from either side, making them inherently secure at the glazing perimeter.

The glazed unit itself may use toughened or laminated glass as appropriate for the installation height and risk category, in accordance with Building Regulations Approved Document N (glazing safety).

Enhanced Coastal Finish

Enhanced finishing is automatically quoted for projects within 1,500 metres of the sea.

The industry standard for marine grade powder-coated aluminium cladding is 40-100 microns. Our standard non-marine finish across all alu-clad products is 60-80 microns. Our enhanced coastal finish starts at 120 microns, meaningfully thicker than the category baseline, for projects exposed to salt air and prolonged weather.

Regular maintenance is still important to preserve the lifespan of your windows.
